Drivers Remain Stuck At 4-Way Stop After Everyone Insists Everyone Else Go First
CENTRALIA, WA — A local 4-way stop became completely gridlocked Tuesday morning after all four drivers politely insisted everyone else go first.
Witnesses say the crisis began when one driver gave the classic “you go ahead” wave. The other three drivers immediately returned the gesture, creating a courtesy loop that brought traffic to a standstill.
“It was horrifying,” said one man stuck behind the scene. “Every time somebody started to move, they panicked, smiled, and waved the other guy through again. I missed work, lunch, and my son’s graduation.”
Police eventually arrived to direct traffic, but the officer reportedly made things worse by pointing at one car and saying, “Whenever you’re ready, sir.”
At publishing time, county officials were considering replacing the stop signs with a roundabout, which experts say should solve the problem by confusing everyone equally.
