Lewis County Begins 2027 Budget, Discovers Money Still an Issue
LEWIS COUNTY — County officials are beginning work on the 2027 budget, initiating the annual process of determining how to pay for roads, employees, public safety, buildings and approximately 400 things residents assumed were funded by “the state or something.”
Departments will spend the coming weeks reviewing expenses and priorities before commissioners ultimately adopt a budget.
Early discussions are expected to include the traditional budget-season exercises of identifying essential services, finding efficiencies and staring quietly at spreadsheets until someone asks whether anything can just wait until 2028.
Early projections indicate the county will once again be unable to fund everything everyone wants while simultaneously lowering every tax.
I especially like “staring quietly at spreadsheets” because it keeps the satire dry and believable rather than turning the county officials themselves into the punchline.
